The Paris Climate Accords
In 1992, 154 countries signed an international treaty, the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), designed to prevent dangerous human interference with our climate system. The UNFCCC remains the primary assembly discussing climate change on the international stage. It is the core framework for international policy and cooperation to fight against climate change through climate adaptation, mitigation, and resilience. As of 2024, there are 198 parties to the convention—near universal membership. Every year, the UNFCCC holds a two-week-long assembly, the Conference of the Parties (COP), for the purpose of decision making and deliberation as a convention. Our committee will take place at the upcoming 29th meeting of the Conference of the Parties, COP29 Azerbaijan.
